Urological training

After six years of medical school, there is a 12 month-long period of training as an internship followed by a state exam. Thereafter one can apply for a position as resident in urology. It takes a minimum of four years education to become an urologist. This education includes 14 months in surgery (general, vascular, plastic and pediatric), 2 months in gynecology, 2 months in nephrology, 1 month in transfusiology. Each of these periods are followed by an exam. The urological residency takes 3 years usually done at the university hospital. It includes all aspects of modern urology (ESWL, endourology, laparoscopic surgery and renal transplantation) At the end of the residency program there is a final oral examination which is followed by a practical (in the operating room) evaluation.

Career prospects

Most of the urologists work in general or university hospitals. Another possibility is a private practice. In order to practice in a university hospital one must obtain a diploma of postgraduate studies in research followed by a thesis of science.
