Urological training
After six years of medical school, one year as an ”intern” or house officer ersults in full registration. Basic surgical training lasts two years minimum and results in an exit exam, AFRCSI or previously FRCSI. An option to take a general surgical year at registrar level is available. More recently progression to a registrar year in urology is recommended either before or after a thesis year of research. This is traditionally in basic science. Next is to obtain a position on the six year higher training scheme in urology. An exit exam FRCS(urol) and a completion of training certificate permits the tainee to apply for and become a consultant urologist.
Career prospects
Currently trainee numbers exceeds consultant job vacancies. Traditionally graduates, having similar training and exam qualifications sought employment in the United Kingdom. Some would obtain a consultant position in Ireland eventually. More recently there has been an expansion of positions but to achieve the recommended ratio of 1:100,000 (urologist:population) as per BAUS guidelines there would need to be a doubling of urologists. CME and Medical Specialists Register has been introduced to Ireland and is compulsory.
