Urological training

From the beginning of 2001 a new era of training for urological residents has begun. The four Hungarian university departments of urology (Budapest, Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs) organize a special program together (called SZFTP).

The aims of the training (briefly):
- to establish a uniform way of training
- to establish a uniform requirement system
- to prepare every resident for the FEBU exam

After finishing medical school every resident - who wants to be a urologist – has to accomplish a 26 months of basic training (1st and 2nd year):
- 6 months of emergency medicine; 8 months of general surgery; 1 month of vascular surgery; 1 month of gynecology; 3 months at urological outpatient department; 2 months of andrology; 3 months of pediatric urology.

From the 3rd till the 6th year they have to complete 48 months of inpatient urology training, including ultrasound course. During this 48 months there are 5 meetings a year  (at one of the four university departments with rotating) where they cover different topics of urology: starting with urological anatomy and physiology, followed by urological radiology, infectology, traumatology, urodynamics, urogynecology, prostate diseases and ending with urological oncology and andrology. These sessions are held for 3-4 days each,  mixed with theoretical and practical trainings with live coverage from the op. theater. At the end of every session they have a small exam, and every year they complete the EBU in-service exam.
