European Society of Residents in Urology

The European Society of Residents in Urology (ESRU) was founded in 1991 as the body representing the trainees in urological surgery within the European Union and its associated countries. From the start in 1991 until the beginning of 1996 the name of the organization was European Board of Urologists in Training (EBUT). The ESRU is an independent organization working in close cooperation with the European Board of Urology (EBU) and the European Association of Urology (EAU) in matters concerning the training and education of residents in urology. The ESRU is based upon work done by residents; they are grouped in the ESRU-Board.

Objectives
The objectives of the ESRU foundation are:

• to support training in urology in Europe
• to closely collaborate with the EBU, the EAU and other recognised organisations.
• to organize congresses and workshops for urologists in training.
• to maintain a representation in the EBU and in organisations, which are involved in urological training in Europe.
• to support the creation of national associations for urologists in training in Europe.

Activities
The activities of the ESRU include:

• representation of the views, ideas and needs of the European urological residents in urology in various fora, such as the EBU, the EAU and the medical industry.
• supporting the different national organizations of urological trainees, and supporting the foundation of such organizations in countries where they do not yet exist.
• editing an up-dated document on the ESRU' s view of good urological training and collecting information about the present training situation for the European urological residents.
• organizing exchanges between trainees in different countries.
• promotion of educational courses and material directed to urological trainees, if possible free of charge for the individual trainee.
• organization of the annual International Meeting of the European Society of Residents in Urology, which provides a forum for scientific and social interaction between trainees.
• bringing together trainees who may have mutual research, professional or social interests.
• maintaining an updated Internet site for the spread of information to the European trainees
• facilitating the contact among trainees and between trainees and various institutions.
  
  

Member Countries
The member countries of the ESRU correspond to the member countries of the EBU, which is one of the boards of the 'Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes. (the UEMS) and thereby the official body of urologists in the European Union. In addition to the EU member countries, the UEMS has accepted a number of countries as full members which makes them eligible to be represented in the EBU and ESRU as full members. Countries that are associated members of the UEMS have the possibility to become associated members of the ESRU.

Structure
Each country may send two representatives (National Communication Officers - NCO's) to the ESRU Board. In the vast majority of the member countries the NCO's are elected by the national urological trainees' organization. In a few countries where no such national organization exists, the national urological association proposes the NCO's. The ESRU Board meets twice a year. In addition to the NCO's, invited trainees of non-member countries are frequently present at the committee meetings. For some of the most important objectives of the ESRU, specific NCO's are appointed for the organization of the work. These NCO's are the Exchange Officer, the Education Officer and the Internet Officer.
The Executive Committee of the ESRU is in charge of organizing and co-ordinating the activities of the ESRU. The members of the Executive Committee are the chairman, the chairman elect, the secretary, the treasurer, and the past chairman. The ESRU Executive Committee is represented in the EBU committees and in the EAU.
